When Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor and key African-American legislators opposed Gov. Sonny Perdue's suggestion that Georgia consider linking HOPE scholarships to SAT scores, they claimed to be out to protect black students. I agree with their assessment that, on average, African-American students often underperform white students on standardized tests such as the SAT, but I think that a long-term solution to this problem is a lot more complex. Of course she was comparing Americans to a certain variety of Western Europeans, in that ignorant Euro-centric way so typical of second-rate academics. These students were disproportionately black and from the Southeastern United States. The information was revealed at an AIDS conference in San Francisco held in February 2004. The facts in themselves are disturbing: not only do black men (who have sex with men) make up 88% of these new college student AIDS cases, but a third of these men also have sex with women. In the interest of honesty and transparency, I should tell you that I voted for President Bush, and consider myself a conservative. I should also tell you that I spent at least the first 25 years of my life as a Democrat.
